This kit provides the necessary parts to convert earlier Coupes, Cabriolets and R8 200/400's from the older 14VT alarms system, some of which use Infrared Fobs, to the system used on later MGs and Rovers based on Lucas 5AS system.
This kit provides the nessasary parts to convert earlier Coupes, Cabriolets and R8 200/400's from the older 14VT alarms system, that uses Infrared Fobs to the system used on later MG's and Rovers based on Lucas 5AS system.
Infrared fobs are harder to find, an even when you find them, are very hard to programme, and indeed get the equipment to do so. Converting to the 5AS system gets round that issue, as you can use Lucas 5AS fobs. These can be purchased new from various sources, or refurbished. The 5AS system was used over a greater period, on a greater number of cars, and is far more robust.
You can tell if a car is fitted as standard with the infrared system, as there is a black "dome" on the interior light lens. (or next to it in the case of cabriolets)
The conversion is "plug and play" but ideally, installers would have a a general understanding of automotive electronics and a competent DIY'er. The kit adds an ODBC diagnostic socket, so future fobs can be programmed to the car with Rover's "T4" or PSCAN diagnostic tools.
Its recommended that you read the various forum threads on this subject (on the Rover Coupe Owners Club or 200/400 owners Club forums)

The 5AS unit is a refurbished original unit and fobs provided are UK sourced Aftermarket fobs. The 5AS units the club supplies allow "flashing indicators" on Lock/unlock. The wires for which, need to be joined to the existing Indicator circuits with provided scotchlocks.
A passive ring is also included, this fits round the ignition barrel. This basically picks up a signal from the fobs when they are in the ignition, preventing the immobiliser turning back on. this was a feature fitted to post 98 200's and Rover 25's
Any parts provided come with a 1 year warranty, although we can't warranty self-installation. Warranty is only on parts, not any time taken to install the kit.
Basic installation instructions are provided, but these are a guide. They assume the car is in a fully working state (I.e. all door locks, switches etc, work) before fitment. You may need to correct other faults as a result of fixing this kit!!
